Niklas talks about his internship in Mainz

Since mid-August, we have a new intern at Lilit Kommunikation in Mainz. Niklas is 22 and in the fourth semester of his bachelor’s degree in history and political science at Heidelberg University. He will actively strengthen and support our small team until early October. We spoke with him about his motivation and expectations.

Lilit Kommunikation (LK): Hello Niklas, we are delighted to welcome you as a new member of our team. Did you settle in well during your first week?

Niklas Hauck (NH): Everything went very well. I really like my internship in Mainz. I like the premises very much, and the atmosphere at the agency is personal and family-like. Marietta also takes plenty of time to get me up to speed; for example, she explains how to work with digital management tools such as Trello.

LK: First of all: what prompted you to do an internship at Lilit Kommunikation?

NH: Well, a compulsory internship is part of our bachelor’s degree. Since many humanities and social science graduates become self-employed, at least temporarily, or work at an agency after graduation, I thought getting a taste of this sector could be worthwhile. I got in touch with Marietta through her rhetoric seminar at Heidelberg’s Institute of Political Science. Originally, I was not even looking for an internship in Mainz, but the seminar gave me a positive impression of Marietta as a coach and as a person. That mattered to me because it left me feeling — and this has now been confirmed — that I could bombard her with all kinds of questions and receive understanding, competent and well-founded answers.

LK: What do you hope to gain from an internship? Why did you not apply to a larger agency?

NH: First, of course, a broad insight into an agency’s daily work. What “challenges, hurdles and hurrahs” arise? At Lilit Kommunikation, alongside typical intern tasks, I can also deepen and develop my practical and theoretical knowledge in many fields, including internal and external communication, administration and creative work. My internship in Mainz therefore gives me valuable hands-on experience in the business basics needed in every kind of authority, company and agency. Here I can try being an “all-rounder,” which would only have been possible to a limited extent at a larger company with clearly defined responsibilities.

LK: What would you advise others interested in an internship?

NH: Well, if you are interested in an internship in Mainz, I would simply recommend sending Marietta an email before submitting your actual application, to check whether an internship is possible during your preferred dates. It also lets you get a feel for whether you might be a good personal fit. But it does not have to be an email — Marietta is also easy to reach through her Instagram account mariettagadeke or through the Lilit Kommunikation Facebook page.
