Lilit Kommunikation The World Universities Debating Championship, or WUDC, is coming to Germany for the very first time. From 27 December 2012 to 4 January 2013, the world’s 1100 brightest and most eloquent young speakers will gather in Berlin to address the major social and political questions of our time in a friendly contest between arguments for and against. I have been involved as Chief of Staff since January 2012. Since then, we have recruited over 200 volunteers who contribute their time. Whether event technology, tournament direction, participant support, communication or public relations, my staffing office is in touch with every part of the organisation, finding the right talent and integrating people into the team where they fit best. You could not imagine a better playground for someone passionate about HR! Our tasks clearly show how human resources is involved in every part of the overall organisation. Organisational development was on the agenda from day one because many areas had not yet been set up at all. Internal communication and keeping all staff informed through newsletters, a Facebook group for joint coordination, and planning and delivering training and staff events are also among my responsibilities, as is leading all staff during the ten-day event itself. Our helpers come not only from Germany but from across the globe. We are in touch with young people from the Netherlands, Chennai in India, Bulawayo in Zimbabwe, Manila in the Philippines, Zagreb in Croatia, Belgrade in Serbia and many other places. We want to enable all of them to come to Germany to engage internationally in their hobby, debating, and thereby send a profoundly democratic message to their fellow citizens too.
